Dr. William H. Foege, a physician who played a pivotal role in the campaign to eradicate smallpox, and a member of the Marguerite Casey Foundation Board of Directors, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Dr. Foege’s “leadership has contributed significantly to increased awareness and action on global health issues, and his enthusiasm, energy, and effectiveness in these endeavors have inspired a generation of leaders in public health,” the White House said in its announcement.
