VOICES for Alabama’s Children (VOICES) was established in 1992 and is the longest standing statewide child advocacy organization in Alabama, with a mission to ensure the well-being of Alabama’s children through research, public awareness, and advocacy.
According to 2012 Alabama KIDS COUNT data, 26 percent of the state’s children (approximately 260,000) live in poverty. VOICES moves its constituents to advocate for policies aimed at improving the lives of low-income families. VOICES uses a three-pronged approach to advance its mission—research, public awareness, and policy advocacy. Its flagship program is the VOICES Child Advocacy Network (VOICES CAN!), a statewide grassroots network of families who receive training on policy issues and gain access to mobilization and advocacy tools including online actions and social media communications. Through its annual Alabama Kids Count Data Book, VOICES provides reliable data, policy recommendations, and tools to state legislators and public officials and advocates to advance the well-being of children and families.
