San Diego LGBT Community Center : San Diego Equal Voice Network
Purpose of Grant
Project support for the San Diego Equal Voice Network.
The mission of The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV communities by providing activities, programs and services that create community; empower community members; provide essential resources; advocate for civil and human rights; and embrace, promote and support our cultural diversity.
The Center works to improve and sustain the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV communities in the greater San Diego area by engaging them in advocacy that directly confronts the unique challenges experienced by low-income LGBT people and their families. Founded in 1973 and serving more than 50,000 primarily low-income individuals each year, The Center is the nation’s third largest community-based LGBT organization. Fifty-one percent of the youth, couples and seniors served by The Center are people of color.
The Center integrates its delivery of direct services with issue education and leadership development programming that exposes its communities to the social, economic and political systems that affect their lives and builds their capacities for acting in their own behalf to effect change. The Center has established itself as a vital, trusted resource in the community and leverages its relationships with families toward movement for change.
