Marguerite Casey Foundation created the Pat Schroeder Board Fellowship in 2017. The Foundation’s Board of Directors selects a fellow from Shriver-network members who self nominate for the opportunity. The fellow participates in the educational portion of Foundation board meetings for an 18-month term, providing a youth perspective during discussions. They gain valuable leadership experience while also increasing their knowledge of social justice issues and solutions across communities.
More than 100 young people have received the Sargent Shriver Youth Warriors Against Poverty award since 2012 – all youth leaders who demonstrate the effectiveness of organizing, advocating and social justice. The board fellowship is one example of how the Foundation engages this network.
We are pleased to introduce Deveraux Smith, our 2019-20 Pat Schroeder Board Fellow. Deveraux is executive director of Kids Eat Free, a program that aims to change lives by providing nutritious food to children and families. Under his leadership, Kids Eat Free has filled 10,000 backpacks with food (enough to fill two 20-foot-long truck trailers). Deveraux has been volunteering at a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C. since he was 9 years old. He has planned homeless-awareness initiatives that connect community members with people in politics, academia, business, and nonprofits.
