Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart

This event is part of the MCF Book Club: Readings for a Liberated Future series. The MCF Book Club shares the ideas of leaders who encourage us to imagine how we can radically transform our democracy, economy, and society.

Marguerite Casey Foundation and Seattle Arts and Lectures are proud to present an MCF Book Club event in honor of the book Age of Insecurity: Coming Together as Things Fall Apart. Moderated by MCF’s president and CEO Dr. Carmen Rojas, the virtual premiere of this event features author Astra Taylor, along with Sarah Leonard, editor in chief of Lux magazine, and Maximillian Alvarez, editor in chief of the Real News Network.

In The Age of Insecurity, Taylor weaves together social critique, memoir, history, political analysis, and philosophy to illustrate how insecurity is a core product of capitalism, creating profits for a small ruling class at the expense of others. Instead of pursuing individual solutions, she argues, we must develop more caring, collective, and sustainable forms of security.

Join this thought-provoking conversation to uncover, with our panelists, the difference between inequality and insecurity and why understanding this difference is so vital for solidarity movements today.

From climate impacts to economic uncertainty, addressing the emotional toll of insecurity is helping strengthen organizing efforts that challenge capitalism's design to perpetuate insecurity for control and profit.
