Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World

For more than 30 years, Anne Applebaum has been studying and reporting on autocratic regimes across the globe. In Autocracy, Inc., she offers a seasoned, nuanced, and global analysis of how tidal waves of autocracy can overtake a government and society—and what can be done to reverse course back toward more democratic principles.

Clear and accessible, this book is a vital read for anyone concerned about the autocratic slide we find ourselves in and what steps we can take to resist it and right the ship, before it becomes harder to do so.

Join author Anne Applebaum and progressive strategist Waleed Shahid for a candid conversation moderated by MCF president and CEO Dr. Carmen Rojas.

Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World

We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, there is so much more to it. Nowadays, autocracies work together, from China to Russia to Iran. Corrupt companies and kleptocrats in one country do business with corrupt companies and kleptocrats in another.

Disapproval and sanctions cannot move the autocrats. Even popular opposition movements, from Venezuela to Hong Kong to Moscow, don’t stand a chance. In this urgent treatise, Anne Applebaum calls for the democracies to fight a new kind of threat.
